Wildberry Lodge is a bed and breakfast in Leicester, North Carolina, 12 miles from Asheville and the Biltmore Estate. Seven rooms and suites, a four-course breakfast, and 45 acres of mountain to wake up in.
The Lodge
Wildberry Lodge brings the majesty of the great national park lodges to the Asheville mountains. The buildings are handcrafted logs, carved and assembled by Maple Island Log Homes, and stained and chinked by innkeepers Ken and Glenda themselves. The Lodge opened in May 2002; The Cabin at Wildberry followed in 2009.
Inside, the Great Room centers on a 32-foot stone fireplace built from Doggett Mountain stone. Upstairs, the Loft is stocked with cold drinks and snacks, and the Game Room holds a pool table, a handcrafted shuffleboard and an infrared sauna. Outside there are two decks at the Forest Retreat with a stone fire pit for s'mores, a sunken seven-person hot tub on the spa deck, and sunset views that guests plan their evenings around.

Local Guide
Stay put or head out: the lodge sits between five miles of its own trails and one of the most loved small cities in the South. Here is how guests actually spend their days.
Five miles of professionally designed trails start at the lodge door. Hike to the ridge for the long view, loop back through the forest, then end the day at Sunset Point or around the stone fire pit at the Forest Retreat.
America's largest home, 12 miles from the lodge: the Vanderbilt mansion, gardens and winery fill a full day easily. Book tickets ahead in busy seasons, and pair it with dinner in Biltmore Village.
The lodge has convenient access to the Parkway, the classic Blue Ridge drive. Pull off for overlooks, picnic spots and short leg-stretcher hikes; fall color here is the region at its best.
Twelve miles down the mountain: independent galleries, bookshops, breweries and cafes, buskers on the corners, and a food scene that punches far above the city's size. Ask Ken and Glenda what is on this week.
A classic day trip into Pisgah National Forest: one of the most photographed waterfalls in the region, visible almost from the road, with swimming holes and trailheads all around it.
434 acres of gardens and trails just south of Asheville, including the famous bonsai collection. A gentle half day that pairs well with a Parkway drive.
The lodge sits at 2,700 feet, reached by a quarter-mile gravel drive uphill from the road. Four-wheel drive is not required, but take it slowly and save the photos for the way down. The drive is not recommended for motorcycles. Asheville Regional Airport (AVL) is 22 miles away, about 30 minutes. Mountain weather shifts fast, so pack a layer even in summer, and in October book early: foliage season fills the lodge fast.
